Bernards Girls Compete in State Quarterfinals Against Mendham

The Bernards girls finished their 2013 season with a quarterfinal loss to 2nd seeded Mendham at Morristown High School on February 7, 2013.  Bernards was seeded 7th and lost by a score of 62-108.  While the boys had already concluded their season, 60% of the boys team showed up, in full headdress and war paint to chant and cheer the girls on.  Tatiana Prendella and Kathryn Cummings swam to a 1-2 finish in the backstroke and each also recorded a second place swim in the 50 free and fly respectively. They both teamed up with Natasha Lukacsko and Isabella St.Onge on the medley and 400 free relays for another second place finish.  Natasha also swam to two more runner up finishes in the 200 and 500 races.  Posting third place finishes were Isabella (50 and 100), Fiona Dunn (500), Shannon Phillips (200), Kelly O'Neill (breast) and the 200 free relay (Lucy Grey, Maddie Grey, Shannon and Natasha).  The girls concluded their season witha 6-5-1 record and a Skyland Conference Raritan Division co-championship title.

Tatiana Prendella and Andrew Lawson Set New School Records at Somerset County Championships

Andrew Lawson lowered his one month old 100 backstroke school record with a 53.81 at the 49th Somerset County Championship meet on February 2, 2013 at Montgomery High School.  Andrew placed 2nd in the back and also placed 6th in the 100 fly.  Teammate Ben Baxter placed 6th in the 50 free and 5th in the 100 free with a time that places him on the Bernards Top 5 list with a 50.15.  The two freshman stars also swam on the 7th place medley relay with George Wadsworth and Ford Atwater and on the 6th place 400 free relay with Ford and Justin Schwed.  The 200 free relay foursome of George, Wesley Lui, Max Guglietta, and Justin finished in 9th place.

Tatiana Prendella broke Kelly deMarrais' 10 year old mark in the 50 free with a 24.84 - good enough for 2nd place.  Tatiana recorded another 2nd place finish with a 1:00.06 in the 100 back and led off two of the 8th place relays for Bernards.  In the medley relay, Tatiana was followed by Kelly O'Neill, Kathryn Cummings, and Isabella St.Onge and in the 400 free relay by Lucy Grey, Kathryn and Isabella.  The 200 free relay squad of Lucy, Maddie Grey, Shannon Phillips, and Isabella also finished in the 8th place spot.  Kathryn also put points on the scoreboard with a very fast 10th place finish in the 100 fly.

Bernards Girls Raritan Division Co-Champions with Win Over Voorhees

The Bernards girls secured the title of Raritan Division co-champions in the Skyland Conference (a title they held alone in 2012) with a convincing 122-48 win over Voorhees at Raritan Valley Community College at 3:30pm on January 30, 2013.  The girls finished their conference competitions with an unbeaten 6-0-1 record tying North Hunterdon to share the conference title.  The girls won every event except the final relay and swept 5 of them with first place finishes being recorded by 11 different swimmers.  Natasha Lukacsko led two of the individual event sweeps as Natasha, Isabella St.Onge and Fiona Dunn and Natasha, Maddie Grey and Ariana Fazelat went 1-2-3 in the IM and the 100 free respectively. Natasha also swam with Tatiana Prendella, Leigha Banks and Maddie Grey on the winning medley relay, in which Kathryn Cummings, Kelly O'Neill, Lauren Cannan and Lucy finished in second place.  The other individual event sweep was completed by Shannon Phillips, Grace Lobo and Silvie Coheleach in the 200 free.  The 200 free relay teams of Katie Hildebrandt, Leigha, Morgan Cohan, and Lucy and Shannon, Allison Lukacsko, Silvie and Maddie grabbed the two top spots.  Other individual winners were Lucy (50), Kathryn (fly), Tatiana (500), Lauren (back) and Isabella (breast).  The girls are now 6-3-1 overall.

The boys lost an extremely tight contest, 78-88 to Voorhees, despite winning two relays and 6 of the 8 individual events.  Andrew Lawson (50 and fly) and Ben Baxter (100 and breast) each won two individual events and combined with Justin Schwed and Max Guglietta to take the 200 medley relay.  Andrew, Justin, Ford Atwater and Max also won the 400 free relay.   Ford also took the 200 free and Wes Lui swam his heart out to come from behind and then hold off a charging Voorhees swimmer to grab the 500 free.  Wes then climbed out of the pool and immediately anchored the 200 free relay behind Justin, Ford, and Ben Baxter - a gutsy performance indeed.

Bernards Swims Past Somerville

The Bernards girls remained unbeaten in the Skyland Conference's Raritan Division as they swam past Somerville 110-60 on January 23 at the Somerset Hills YMCA.  The girls improved their overall record to 5-3-1 and their conference record to 5-0-1.  They have one more meet in their division against Voorhees on January 30. The girls dominated the meet, finishing 1-2 in 6 of the events, including the opening medley relay where Tatiana Prendella, Kelly O'Neill, Kathryn Cummings and Natasha Lukacsko took first and Tess Mistretta, Leigha Banks, Lauren Cannan and Maddie Grey swam to a tie for second place.  Tatiana and Isabella St. Onge finished 1-2 in the IM and then Natasha, Lucy, and Morgan Cohan swept the 50 free to give Bernards a 44-18 lead heading in to the break.  The girls continued their sprinting dominance by also sweeping the 100 free with Tatiana, Shannon Phillips and Maddie and then winning the 200 free relay with Tatiana, Natasha, Isabella and Lucy.  The final 1-2-3 finish in the back (Kathryn, Lauren, Tess) and a 1-2 finish in the breast (Kelly, Leigha) sealed the deal for Bernards.

The boys completed a come-from-behind victory 86-81 by winning the closing relay against Somerville and improved their record to 4-5.  The boys won 9 of the events and featured three triple winners.  Andrew Lawson took the 50 (leading a 1-2-3 sweep with Ben Baxter and Ford Atwater) and 100 breast and also swam on the winning medley relay (with Ben, George Wadsworth and Justin Schwed).  George Wadsworth also won the IM, leading a 1-2 finish with Ben Ferrara and the 100 fly.  Ben Baxter's additional two victories were in the 500 free and as a member of the meet clinching 400 free relay along with Justin, Max Guglietta and Ford.  Ford also took the 200 free.  The other victory for the evening belonged to Max's solo effort in the backstroke which brought Bernards to within a point of Somerville, but Bernards still needed the closing relay to secure the victory.  A 1-3 finish (George, Manny Vazquez, Sina Gounili and Ben Ferrara finished third) put Bernards ahead by 5 points to take the meet.

Bernards Swims Fast at Cougar Invitational
Lucy Grey Grabs Four Gold Medals

Lucy Grey won the 50 free and swam on all three gold medal relays at the Cougar Invitational on January 18, 2013 at Montgomery High School.  Shannon Phillips won the 200 free and along with Lucy, teamed up with Natasha Lukacsko and Katie Hildebrandt on both winning free relays.  Lucy also swam the anchor leg behind Tess Mistretta, Kelly O'Neill, and Lauren Cannan on the first place medley relay.  Kelly (100 breast) and Lauren (100 fly and 100 back) finished with silver medals in their individual events and Tess grabbed a bronze in hers (100 back).  Also finishing in third place was Fiona Dunn in the 500 free.  Natasha was fourth in the 100 fly.  Ford Atwater led the boys with a third place in the 100 free and a fourth in the 200 free.  Justin Schwed was 5th in the 50 free.  Ford and Justin teamed up with Max Guglietta and Wesley Lui to place 5th in the 400 free relay.

Bernards Boys Beat North Hunterdon
Girls Swim to a Tie

The Bernards girls swam in a nail biter against their toughest Skyland Conference Raritan Division opponent - North Hunterdon - at the Somerset Hills YMCA on January 16. 2013.  Both teams have been unbeaten in conference competition and swam to an 85-85 tie in a meet where the score was tied 3 times during the meet and rarely had more than a 2 point difference between the two teams.  After taking only second place in the medley relay, Bernards showed tremendous heart by bouncing right back with Natasha Lukacsko, Shannon Phillips and Fiona Dunn swimming to a 1-2-5 punch in the 200 free to tie the score.  Tatiana Prendella and Annie Ray went 1-3 in the IM, Lucy and Maddie Grey finished 2-3 in the 50 and Kathryn Cummings won the fly.  The meet was tied again before the 200 free relay, which Bernards won with Maddie, Shannon, Lucy and Natasha.  North followed that with a victory in the back to tie the meet for the third time. After Kelly O'Neill took second in the breaststroke, North had a 2 point lead going in to the last relay.  Bernards  needed to win that relay to preserve a tie and that is exactly what Kathryn, Natasha, Shannon and Tatiana did.  Bernards has two remaining conference division opponents to face - Somerville and Voorhees.  The girls are now 4-3-1 overall.

The 10 boys on the Bernards roster combined to take down the 25 boys on the North Hunterdon team, 87-78.  The medley relay of Andrew Lawson, Ben Baxter, George Wadsworth and Ford Atwater won the medley relay and then went 3-4-5 with Max Guglietta, Ben Ferrara, and Sina Gounili.  Ben Baxter and Wesley followed that with a 1-3 finish to put Bernards in front, where they would stay until the 200 free relay, which North placed 1st and 3rd on to give them a 4 point lead.  The Bernards boys closed the meet with three 1-3 finishes in the back (Andrew and Max), breast (Ben B and Ben F) and the 400 free relay teams of Andrew, Justin Schwed, Ford, Ben B and Wesley, George, Max and Manny Vazquez to seal the victory.  Ford and Justin also swept the two sprint freestyle individual events and Wesley also finished second in the 500.  The boys record has now improved to 3-5.

Tatiana Prendella Skyland Conference Champion in the Backstroke

It has been 5 years since a Bernards girl claimed a Skyland Conference individual gold medal (Mary deMarrais won the 500 free in 2008), but sophomore Tatiana Prendella broke that drought by winning the 100 backstroke at Montgomery High School on January 5, 2013.  Tatiana touched the wall in 1:01.05, a time good enough for the number 3 spot on the Bernards all-time Top 5 listing. It should be noted that this Skyland Conference meet includes both the Delaware (large school) and Raritan Divisions (Bernards competes in the Raritan Division for the dual meet season).  While the meet is non-scoring, medals are awarded to the top 6 finishers in each event.  Tatiana also placed third in the 200 free.  Other top finishers for Bernards were Kathryn Cummings, who finished 7th in the fly and 13th in the back and all three relays, which finished in the top 10.  The medley (Tatiana, Kelly O'Neill, Kathryn, Lucy Grey) and 200 free relay (Lucy, Katie Hildebrandt, Shannon Phillips, Natasha Lukacsko) teams finished 9th and the 400 free relay (Tatiana, Lucy, Natasha, Kathryn) placed 7th (ahead of Watchung Hills and Bridgewater!)

Andrew Lawson Lowers Backstroke Record Again

Freshmen Ben Baxter and Andrew Lawson made quite the statement for Bernards as they combined for 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th place finishes in their individual events and also joined forces with Ford Atwater, Justin Schwed and George Wadsworth on 7th and 8th place relay team at the Skyland Conference championship meet on January 5, 2013.  Andrew's 2nd place finish in the 100 backstroke lowered his 2 day old school record to a 54.43, almost a full second and a half ahead of the #2 time, held by John Lawson.  Ben blazed to a 23.03 in the 50 free, which was good enough for 3rd place.  Ben and Andrew finished 4th and 6th respectively in the 100 free.  Both of them swam on the 8th place medley relay with Ford and George and on the 400 free relay with Ford and Justin.  The 200 free relay of George, Wesley Lui, Max Guglietta and Justin finished in 15th place.

Bernards Swim Team to Work With Special Olympics Athletes

The Bernards swim team will be working with the local Special Olympics swim team at the Somerset Hills YMCA throughout the season.  The Bernards swimmers will assist in coaching the swim team, helping them with their stroke technique and participating in fun, yet competitive relay races.  This will be a great opportunity for the Bernards swimmers to serve their community while sharing their talents with a great group of local athletes.
