Bernards Girls Team Finishes 1st at the Third Colonial Hills Conference Meet
Bernards Boys Place 9th

Bernards won the Third Annual Colonial Hills Conference Championships on January 17 at Newark Academy.  Bernards won the first Colonial Hills Conference meet in 2001 (SCM) and placed fourth at last year's championship (SCY).  This year, the Bernards girls took all three relays setting new meet records in each of them, and also won 7 of the 8 individual events, 5 in meet record time.  Two of these records were new Bernards High School records.  Of the 22 Girls' Conference Meet records (SCY and SCM). Bernards now owns 17 of them.  Bernards scored 258 points to win while, second place went to Mountain Lakes (204 points) and third place went to Montclair Kimberley Academy (178 points).

The girls opened the meet with a convincing win in the 200 medley relay as Catherine Skoda, Nori Skoda, Grace deMarrais, and Holly Shapiro swam to a conference meet record of 1:57.59.  Kelly deMarrais then took first place in the 200 free with a conference meet and school record of 1:56.31.  In the 200 IM, Grace just slipped under the meet record of 2:15.01 with a 2:14.99 gold medal swim (improving on her Bernards #4 time), and Rachel Quis finished sixth, putting some very important points up on the board.  Catherine came back for her second win of the evening to repeat as the 50 free champion in 25.57 (only .02 over last year's meet record time).

After the break, Nori and Rachel secured third and fifth place in the 100 fly, the only event Bernards did not win.  Kelly smashed the 100 free record of 56.20 with a 54.10 and in the 500, Grace finished first in 5:22.32, while Kellyn Hepper swam to a season best 6:12.40.  Bernards closed out the meet with 4 more conference meet records.  The 200 free relay was the only close relay of the evening, as Catherine, Rachel, Holly Steiner, and Kelly swam an exciting come-from-behind victory in 1:45.18 (#4 BHS all-time).  Catherine and Nori each lowered their own meet records in the 100 back (1:01.71) and 100 breast (1:08.33).  Nori's breaststroke time bettered her sister Alexis' time of 1:08.51, from 1999.  Helping to secure the championship for Bernards, Kellyn finished 5th and Emily Anderson finished 9th in the breast.  Closing out the meet, Grace, Rachel, Nori, and Kelly swam to a very fast (#3 BHS all-time) 3:45.14.

On the boys side, Bernards had a roster of one for the third year in a row.  John Crerand placed 8th in the 200 free and 12th in the 100 free to score in both events.  The Bernards boy(s) finished in 9th place overall.
