Kelly deMarrais Earns 5th and 6th All-State Titles at Meet of Champions

Kelly deMarrais placed 6th and 10th in the 200 and 500 free events at the 2005 NJSIAA Meet of Champions held at the Gloucester Institute of Technology in Sewell, NJ on March 5 and 6.  Kelly swam a 1:56.43 (1:54.37 in the prelims) for the 200 and then came back with a very fast 5:10.48 (2nd in the consolation finals, but 7th fastest time of the meet).  Kelly also anchored the 200 and 400 free relays, which finished 22nd and 21st, respectively.  Julie Farrell and Julie Murphy opened both relays, while the third spot was shared by Erin Hepper (200) and Jamie Hepburn (400).  The top 24 relays swim in the finals, so the Bernards girls all swam on Sunday.  This was noteworthy because both relays went in to the meet seeded dead last (200 - 34th; 400 28th).  All five girls recorded best times for the year.

Brendan Lawson was the lone boys qualifier from Bernards, having swum a converted 22.74 at the Somerset County championship meet to place him as the 32nd seed.  Brendan swam a personal best time of 22.60 to move him to 19th place, and his time also qualified him for the YMCA SCY National Championships in Fort Lauderdale (April 5-8, 2005).  Brendan's time pulls him to within 0.09 seconds of the BHS record, held by Jamie Meyers (1998).
