Team Championships

From 2/17/1999:

Bernards makes it to second round of States!!!

5th seeded Bernards lost to the number one seed Haddonfield (73-97) in the second round of the State playoffs at GCIT (2/19/1999).

Bernards still managed to win 6 of the 11 events and performed quite well with only 15 team members able to make the trip to South Jersey. Unfortunately, Lesley Barnet could not be with us, but our solid core of seven Somerset Hills YMCA swimmers led our team in a great fight against a very large Haddonfield squad. Two new school records were set as Alexis Skoda swam a very fast 54.19 100 free and the 400 free relay team of James Meyers, Dorian Delamare, Rick Barfuss, and Scott Armstrong lowered their own record to 3:30.93.

The same foursome won the 200 free relay and Scott added victories in the 200 and 500 free as well. Our other wins came from Dorian Delamare in the 200 IM and Rick Barfuss in the 100 fly. Runner-up points came from the 200 medley relay of Alexis, Lauren Kristensen, Julie Meyers, and Cara Williams, Rick in the 200 free, James in the 50 and the 100 free, Lauren in the 500 free, Julie in the 100 back, and Alexis in the 100 breast.

Even though our season ended with a loss, we have never had a better season than this one! The loss was to the number one seed of the State Team Championships, we had an overall 10-2 record, and placed third in the Counties for both boys and girls!

5th seeded Bernards wins tight contest over 4th seeded APSchalick in the first round of the State playoffs at Camden County Vo-Tech (2/17/1999)

It was a tight meet as APS led the meet through the 100 freestyle. Bernards tied it with a 1-2 finish by Scott Armstrong and Lesley Barnet in the 500, and maintained a slim margin to the end of the meet as both the 200 free relay (James Meyers, Julie Meyers, Rick Barfuss, Armstrong) and the 400 free relay (James Meyers, Alexis Skoda, Dorian Delamare, Armstrong) finished first. Scott added a victory in the 200 free to complete his 4 first-place showing. Also recording 4 victories was James Meyers with victories in the 50 and the 100.

Rick Barfuss added two individual wins to his relay win in the 100 fly and the 100 back as AP Schalick won only the IM, the breaststroke, and the medley relay. Extremely important back-up points were scored by the medley relay of Barfuss, Skoda, Delamare and Barnet, Lauren Kristensen (100 and 200 free), Julie Meyers (50 and back), Skoda (IM and breast), Delamare (IM and breast), Barnet (fly and 500) and the 400 free relay of Barnet, Kristensen, Jenna Steiner, and Julie Meyers.

Alexis Skoda set new school records in the 200 IM (2:10.86) and the 100 breast (1:08.51) as did the 200 medley relay team (1:48.95).

From 2/10/1999:

For the first time in our 11 year history, the Bernards co-ed team has made the state team championship playoffs. This is particularly noteworthy when you consider the following:

• Bernards is a group I school (smallest group of 4), and in swimming, Groups I, II, and III are all combined in to one group for the state pairings.

• Bernards is in the Central region. The schools are grouped in 4 regions: North I, North II, Central, and South. For swimming, Central and South are combined in to one region.

• Bernards is a co-ed (combined) team of 4 boys and 22 girls. There is a girls championship and a boys championship. There is no "combined" championship. Bernards must compete as a boys team.
