2001

This was the year for 20 girls from Bernards to conquer perennial Group IV powerhouses Bridgewater and Hillsborough.  It was also the year for Bernards to dominate the races at the 37th Annual Somerset County Championships held at the Somerset Valley YMCA in Bridgewater on February 3, 2001.  Bernards succeeded in their missions, beating both Bridgewater and Hillsborough, and winning 8 of the 11 events contested, including convincing wins in all three relays.  In the three events they did not win, they took second place.  Unfortunately for Bernards, it was also Mt. St. Mary's year, as they used a very deep line up to score 8 more points than Bernards to take the meet 247-239.

There was plenty to be proud of, however, as Senior Alexis Skoda set two new SCM team records and county meet records in winning her individual events (200 IM-2:22.99 and 100 free-:59.21).  Alexis also anchored the winning 200 free and 400 free relays.  Senior Lesley Barnet showed her domination in the 100 fly by completing a "four-peat," winning this event every one of her high school seasons.  Lesley also finished second in the 200 IM and participated in the victorious 200 medley and 400 free relays.  Bernards last senior, Heather Shapiro, also claimed gold by bringing home the opening medley relay.

Freshman Catherine Skoda won the 50 free and 100 back setting new SCM team records in both events (28.35 and 1:07.13).  Catherine led off the first place 200 medley and swam the decisive third leg on the 200 free relay.  Other gold medalists for Bernards were Sophomore Nori Skoda and freshmen Grace deMarrais and Holly Steiner.  Nori swam an incredibly fast breaststroke leg on the medley relay to open up a 4.6 second lead, which Bernards never relinquished as well as being a member of the winning 400 free relay.  Grace swam very strong lead-off legs on both freestyle relays, and Holly Steiner competed on the championship sprint free relay team.

If Bernards didn't win an event, which only happened three times, they took the next highest spot.  Grace had a couple of solid swims in the 200 and 500 and Nori also had a very strong swim in the 100 breast, both scoring big second place points for Bernards.  Rounding out the scoring effort for Bernards, Nori also placed sixth in the 100 fly and Emily Anderson was 11th in the 100 breast.

For the second year in a row, Dorian represented Bernards as a one man boys team.  Dorian showcased his versatility by placing first in the 200 IM with a school record 2:14.06.  He also finished third in the 100 fly with a 1:00.58.  The Bernards boys "team" placed 10th and claimed the unofficial award of "most points per person" for the second time!
