3 New School Records Set as Bernards Girls Place 6th, Boys place 7th at Somerset County Championships

Kelly deMarrais won her 5th and 6th individual Somerset County titles (in 4 different events) as she won the 200 and 500 free on January 29, 2005 at the Somerset Valley YMCA in Bridgewater.  Kelly has now won the 200 free and 100 free twice and the 200 IM and 500 free once.  Kelly broke Alexis Skoda's 2001 school record in the 200 free as she won the event in 2:09.34.  Kelly also anchored the 5th place 200 and 400 free relays as Bernards placed 6th, behind Mount St. Mary, Montgomery, Bridgewater, Hillsborough, and Pingry.  Also scoring very valuable points for Bernards were Jamie Hepburn, who placed 4th in the 200 IM and 500 free, Julie Farrell, who finished in 8th place in the 50 and 100 free, and Erin Hepper, who posted the 10th fastest swim in the 100 fly.  Jamie, Julie, and Erin joined Kelly in the two free relays.  Erin teamed up with Christina Barkhorn, Kellyn Hepper, and Allissa Cembrook on the 8th place 200 medley relay.

While the Bernards foursome of Lesley Barnet, Lauren Kristensen, Julie Meyers, and Alexis Skoda still holds the 400 free relay Somerset County record (4:07.13 set in 1999), Mount St. Mary's 200 free relay bettered that relay squad's 200 free relay record (1:54.15) with a 1:53.98. (Bernards has won the 400 free relay in 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, and 2004.)

Brendan Lawson exploded off the block and swam a blistering 25.46 in the 50 free, which was good enough for second place.  His time not only breaks the school record Jamie Meyers set in 1999 (25.56), but also converts to a 22.75, which qualifies him for the New Jersey State Meet of Champions.  Brendan also swam the butterfly leg on the 7th place medley relay with John Crerand, Eric English, and Russell Kostelak, which broke an 8 year old school record (2:07.83) set in 1997 by Brendan Duffy, Jamie Meyers, Ricky Barfuss, and Albert Delaney.  Bernards showed up at the counties this year with an 8 man squad and put up 69 points, which was good enough to place 7th, ahead of Somerville, Rutgers Prep, Immaculata, and Franklin.  Russell also scored individual points as he finished 7th in the IM and 11th in the 500.  Brendan, Russell, and John teamed up with KC Tullo for a 5th place finish in the 400 free relay.  The 200 free relay rounded out the scoring for Bernards as KC, Eric, Mariano Agnese, and Doug Bell finished in 9th place.
