Kelly deMarrais Breaks 2 School Records with 7th and 8th County Titles
Boys Finish in 7th place as Brendan Lawson Breaks School Record in the 50
Kelly deMarrais completed her flawless individual career at the Somerset County Championships on January 27 with her 7th and 8th individual County titles (in 5 different events) as she won the 200 free and 100 back. Kelly has now won the 200 free three times, the 100 free twice and the 200 IM, 500 free and 100 back once. Kelly broke her own school record in the 200 free from last year with a winning time of 2:09.00 and broke Catherine Skoda's 100 back record of 1:06.80 (from 2002) with a blistering 1:05.52. Kelly also anchored the 3rd place 200 and 2nd place 400 free relays as Bernards tied Hillsborough for 4th place, behind champion Mount St. Mary, Montgomery, and Bridgewater. Freshman Mary deMarrais had swam to very strong 3rd place finishes in the 200 and 100 free, and Jamie Hepburn finished 7th in the 200 IM and 3rd in the 500 free. Additional points came from soph Julie Farrell, who finished in 8th place in the 100 and 10th in the 50 free, and junior Julie Murphy, who tied Julie F in the 50 for 10th place. Julie F, Julie M, and Mary joined Kelly in the 200 free relay, and Jamie replaced Julie M in the 400 free relay. The 200 free relay time of 1:57.70 converts to a 1:45.37, which qualifies this relay for the NJ State Meet of Champions. The 200 medley relay team of Jamie, Samantha Cembrook, Erin Hepper, and Julie M finished in 6th place.
Mount Saint Mary swam a very fast 4:06.91 to erase the Bernards record of 4:07.13 set in 1999 by Lesley Barnet, Lauren Kristensen, Julie Meyers, and Alexis Skoda. Bernards has won the 400 free relay in 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, and 2004.
Brendan Lawson posted the third new team record as he swam a very fast 25.39 in the 50 free, which placed third and lowers his own team record from last year. Brendan also finished 10th in the breast while fellow junior Russell Kostelak posted a 10th in the 200 IM and an 11th in the 100 free. Brendan and Russell teamed up with Mariano Agnese and Josh Kostelak on the 7th place 200 medley relay and again with Paul Reiss (replacing Josh) on the 8th place 200 free relay. Josh, Mariano, Paul, and Forrest Peralta finished in 9th place on the 400 free relay as Bernards, with 6 boys, finished in 7th place (out of 12 teams).
