Kelly deMarrais Sets Backstroke Conference and School Record
Kelly deMarrais captured her 7th and 8th individual Colonial Hills Conference titles in as many tries in her last Conference meet of her career. And she did it by swimming a 58.94 in the 100 backstroke, which not only lowered her on school record of 59.11, which she set earlier this week against Metuchen, but she also broke Catherine Skoda's record of 1:01.71, set in 2003. Kelly also won the 200 free for the 4th year in a row and led off the 3rd place 200 medley relay and anchored the 2nd place 400 free relay (in 52.88). Younger sister Mary won the 500 free in 5:23.92, which placed her 4th on the BHS all-time Top 5 list. The deMarrais sisters (Grace, Kelly, and Mary) now hold 3 of the fastest 4 times in Bernards history in the 500 free. Mary was 2nd in the 200 IM, and also swam on the 200 medley and 400 free relays with Kelly. The girls team finished in 2nd place behind Mountain Lakes and managed to finish 2 points ahead of Pingry. Last year, Pingry edged out Bernards by 7 points. Jamie Hepburn added two individual third place finishes in the 200 and 500 free and also swam on the 3rd place 200 free relay and the 400 free relay. Julie Farrell and Julie Murphy finished 4th and 5th in the 100 free and 8th and 9th in the 50 free, respectively, and Erin Hepper posted extremely critical points with a 7th place 100 fly and a 9th place 200 free. Erin and Julie M. joined Mary and Kelly in the medley relay, while Jule F and Jamie rounded out the 400 free relay team.
The boys finished in a very respectable 4th place (out of 9 teams). Brendan Lawson led the boys with a 4th in the 50 and 5th in the 100 breast, lowering his all-time Top 5 time to 1:06.45. Russell Kostelak finished 5th in the IM and 6th in the 100, lowering his Top 5 time to 2:12.84 in the IM. Eric English placed 8th in both the 50 free and breaststroke, while Mariano Agnese finished 10th in the 200 free and 11th in the breast. Eric lowered his Top 5 breast time to a 1:09.83. Josh Kostelak, Eric, Brendan and Russell finished 3rd in the medley relay and Mariano, Eric, Brendan and Russell took 4th place. Mariano combined with Josh, Forrest Peralta and Paul Reiss for 6th place in the 400 free relay. This was the highest finish ever for the BHS boys.
